Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an extremely common digestive disorder. It is estimated that it affects at least 1 in 4 people at some time in their life. Women are more affected than men by a ratio of 1:3. Although it is not a life-threatening condition, the symptoms cause pain and distress and, for those whose symptoms are extreme, quality of life is severely affected.
IBS is a dysfunction of the gastro-intestinal tract not a disease. Symptoms include diarrhoea, constipation, bloating and abdominal pain. It is a diagnosis of elimination – when more serious conditions have been ruled out, your doctor will tell you that you have IBS.
If you are a sufferer, it is likely that you know the location of all the public toilets in your area, you don’t make appointments in the morning and you avoid eating out.
Why do I suffer from IBS?
The medical profession don’t completely understand the causes of IBS, but diet and emotional stress are indicated. If you suffer from chronic alteration in bowel habits, are elevated levels of stress associated with the changes?
Some studies suggest that there may be a genetic predisposition to developing IBS because sufferers have a more sensitive gut than non-sufferers.
In women, hormonal changes seem to be a factor.
Allergies, especially yeast infections can exacerbate symptoms.
The bowel is significantly longer in some IBS patients.
How can cognitive hypnotherapy help?
There is no known cure for IBS, however cognitive hypnotherapy can help all the variations of your condition and reduce the frequency of your symptoms.
During your therapy we will give advice about diet, exercise and sleep and teach you self-hypnotic techniques to reduce stress. Hypnosis induces relaxation which improves the blood flow to your intestines, something that stress tends to inhibit. During therapy we will also address the conscious and sub-conscious thoughts that influence your symptoms. We provide a set of hypnotic CD’s at no extra cost that, through visualisation and other hypnotic techniques, enhance your control over your digestion, relax you and help you control stress, anxiety and other contributing factors.
A programme of therapy usually involves six one and a half hourly sessions over a 3 month period.
